The way to rank in Google is not to try and rank in Google

January 29th, 2007

It’s a silly title, but a sensible one too. I hear so often people moaning that is it so easy to rank highly in MSN and Yahoo but not Google. Now, they’re either lying or they can actually do that. Well, that’s fantastic. Ranking in one search engine using one specific technique is an extremely ropey thing to do, one minor change and all your artificial SERPs will be lost.

So what I say is rank highly in Yahoo and MSN, do it! If you do you WILL be noticed by people and they WILL link to your site - the next result of this being the higher Google rankings you desire.

This does rely on two rather major factors.

1 - Your site is actually a lovingly crafted site that people will enjoy or find useful and actually want to link to.
2 - You aren’t lying about being able to rank well in Yahoo and MSN.

It’s a simple theory, and one I’m sure is sound.

Another Contextual Links program from V7N

January 24th, 2007

When I first spotted this, I assumed that V7N were coming up with some sort of competitor to AdSense or Yahoo’s YPN programs. Trying to cash in on the news that other contextual advertising schemes are allowed to co-exist with AdSense, although not look anything like them. But it seems not, the V7N Contextual Links program is actually a very modern take on link acquisition for website owners taking advantage of the legions of blog owners out there. It’s sort of pitched somewhere between a traditional text link brokerage and the ReviewMe style sites.

Where it betters link brokerage is that you’re buying a permanent one way link to your site, deep in the content of a post (rather than floundering away on a menu bar or footer of a page somewhere). I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of renting a link on a website at all, so this sits well with me. The prices are more than reasonable at the moment too!

I hope they do really well with this.

Blood Money: Shoemoney’s blog

January 21st, 2007

Another paid post, here? By me? Surely not! Well, as it turns out this one is for Shoemoney’s blog which is actually interesting because it is a place I genuinely frequent on a daily basis. So then, for those people that have no idea: Jeremy Shoemaker (that’s a terrible misspelling I know) is a chap that makes money. He exudes the impression that he is a money making machine. But he isn’t blessed. Oh no, there’s a rags to riches tale there and like most people that can make money he does it by working hard and giving something to the universe that someone else doesn’t. Or by doing things in ways that other people don’t. This attitude should be an inspiration to people sitting around trying to work out how to “make” money. NO ONE WILL TELL YOU. Don’t ask piddly little questions and hang on to your collection of eBooks and bookmarked articles, trying things out damnit. And I’m shouting at myself there more than anyone else :)

What his blog is about is not telling the world his secrets, although his is a very giving person when it comes out to tips and tricks. He also doesn’t mind swearing which is a refreshing thing. How did he get so famous? Well, I’m really not sure. I first heard of him when I read the million page thread he started on the Digital Point forums. He since gained celebrity like status and presents a genuinely interesting radio show. He’s also often on the ball about subjects like chitika and yahoo’s YPN.

I’ll round this off by saying I once had a dream about selling my dog to Jeremy. I’m really not sure what can be read into this. But that’s what happened.
