Another way of looking at PageRank

How about this statement:
The PageRank of your site has NO direct effect on your SERPs.

A lot of people will nod and sigh, others of you will be saying “Oi Chris! Stop talking rubbish!”. Well, they might be right. I have no more insider info that your average webmaster - i.e. I have NO insider info.

But I’ve been looking at my SERPs, the SERPs of others and come the realisation. This realisation follows closely what a lot of people have been saying all along. If only we’d listen, and remember that statement at the top.

Yes, a high PageRank is a good indication of a site that has a lot of links to it. But for what purpose - when what matters is the anchor text in the link itself. That is to say PageRank does matter, but not your own. What matters is the PageRank of the sites linking to you and the anchor text those links contain.

So look less at your own PageRank and look more to gaining quality relevant links.
